Abstract

Modern society does not impose barriers to religious transgression, a complex, multi-pronged process of changing religious identities throughout a lifetime. In Western literature, this process is mainly studied as conversion or transition to a particular religious movement. The main purpose of our article is to reveal the specificities of religious transgression in the Russian territory of the north Caspian Sea area (Astrakhan region, Republic of Kalmykia, Republic of Dagestan) and the attitude towards it of modern student life. The area is a crossroads of three world religions – Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. The methodology of the study was comprehensive and combined quantitative – a survey in the form of a distribution electronic questionnaire, and qualitative methods – content analysis of religious forums on the Internet and depth interviews with people who have committed religious transgressions. In the process, we have identified the main causes and mechanisms of transgressive processes. The most common causes of religious transgression in modern society include interfaith marriage, protest against a religion imposed since childhood, philosophical search, the difficulty of life and curiosity. The mechanisms of transgression were identified during the analysis of the in-depth interviews. The results of the study showed that, in general, the students of northern Caspian Sea are aware of the existence of such processes in their direct contacts. and are much more loyal to the process of religious transgression than the average Russian who discusses these issues in specialized forums.
