Abstract

Exploring gender-specific characteristics of age perception in strangers is one of the prospective targets when studying factors and mechanisms for the construction of the perceived age. The aim of the research was to examine the characteristic features of the way adults construct the perceived age of men and women who are at the age stages of “youth” and “maturity”. The research was carried out within the framework of social psychology of appearance worked out by V. A. Labunskaya. The research sample: 12 people (6 men and 6 women between the ages of 22 and 58) acted as “models” (objects of perception); 60 people (47 women and 13 men between the ages of 18 and 77) acted as subjects of perception. T. A. Vorontsova’s “Photo-Video Representation of Appearance” procedure was the main research method. The results: 1) the characteristic features of the contribution of AC (appearance components) in the structure of age perception of men and women were found: the share of reliance on gender-age, professional, and ethno-cultural stereotypes is more represented in the process of age perception of men than of women; the share of the medium-stable component of appearance in the perception of age of men and women is identical; the major differences were found in the representation of the physical appearance (it is significantly more represented in the perception of the age of women) and the dynamic component of the appearance (expressive behavior) – it is more represented in the structure of the perception of the age of men); 2) a hierarchy of appearance components in the perception of the age of men and women was constructed; 3) and differences in the structure of age perception of men and women at the “youth / maturity” age stages were discovered. The study revealed the role of the gender factor in constructing the perceived age of an unknown person.
