The Components of the Collective Narcissism Construct of Dagestani Youth

Abstract

The introduction describes the basic concepts of narcissism, its varieties, and specific features. The views on collective narcissism and the relevance of its research are emphasized. The article highlights the prevalence of ideas about a three-­factor model of narcissism based on a foreign sample and the lack of elaboration of the issue of identifying a model of the construct of narcissism in the Russian sample. Goal. To build theoretical and empirical models of the collective narcissism construct of Dagestani youth. The following methods are used in the course of the research, such as: collective narcissism (Romanova M. O. et al.), questionnaire of temperament structure (V. M. Rusalov), types of ethnic identity (G. U. Soldatova), communicative aggressiveness V. V. Boyko, questionnaire of the Big Five (Kornilova T. V., Zirenko M. S., Huseynova R. D.) methodology assessments of narcissism (F.-W. Deneke and B. Hilgenstock, adapted by N. M. Zalutskaya et al.). The data obtained were processed by exploratory factor analysis. Selection. The study involved 250 male and female students (50%), aged 20 to 30 years, of various national groups (Avars, Dargins and Kumyks, Lezgins, Laks). The predominance of vulnerable Self in the group of women was found. The factorization of the data allowed us to identify an 8‑factor model of collective narcissism among Dagestani youth. The model combined the following factors: vulnerable/grandiose Self, aggression, autagression, general narcissism, ethnophanatism, ethnonegativism, demonstrativeness, temperamental properties and social activity. The presented model of the collective narcissism construct is combined with the model of foreign authors, but with fewer factors. Presumably, Dagestani youth express communal narcissism, with a predominance of the vulnerable Self.
