Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify personal characteristics that increase the availability of social capital in networks of relationships between people. Individual human qualities are considered the main reasons that guide social capital in a certain direction. The methodological foundation of the work is socio-philosophical analysis. Access to the socio-philosophical level of reflection makes it possible to generalize the data accumulated in various scientific fields and develop a supra-disciplinary view of the phenomenon. By necessity, the study draws on the theory of social capital, the basic assumptions of social network analysis, and relational sociology, focusing on the personality traits included in the psychological model known as the Big Five. The reasons that depend on the personality of the network actor and direct the flows of social capital to him are grouped into three groups: emotional, practical, and informational. Emotional reasons are based on a person’s desire to build comfortable, positive interpersonal interactions. Practical reasons are based on the desire to obtain direct benefits. Informational reasons are based on cognitive needs and people’s natural desire to share information. Five personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience are analyzed in the context of each group of causes. Correlations are revealed between the development of the main personality traits and the ability of a person to accept and fill the social capital of the network. The proposed systematization of the individual characteristics of an actor building a personal network can become a methodological lens in developing a system of prognostic parameters 1) the availability of social capital to individuals; 2) the dynamics of social capital exchanges and the direction of its flows in various network segments.
