Abstract

The results of empirical research into the characteristics of the emotional sphere and their interconnection with the level of self-realization of military and civilian pensioners are analyzed in the research within the context of subjective paradigm. In the context of this study, self-updating of a person in retirement age is understood as a subjective characteristic and is regarded as an indicator of their adaptive readiness to significant changes in social status. Emotional intelligence, as a complex characteristic of the emotional sphere of a military pensioner, is investigated as one of the personal and psychological determinants of their adaptive readiness in a given period of life. It has been shown that there are significant differences between military and civilian pensioners in the level of integrative emotional intelligence, as well as in its individual characteristics. It has been suggested that the generally lower levels of emotional intelligence of military pensioners are due to the specifics of their prior professional and life experience which excluded the possibility for the effective formation and development of individual skills in the emotional sphere. Regardless of the pension status of respondents (military and civilian pensioners), there are significant correlations between the level of their self-actualization and the characteristics of their emotional intelligence. It has been shown that the formation of a number of characteristics of the emotional sphere is typical for a pensioner as a subject of self-realization. Many factors are a determinant of an individual’s adaptability to the simple and difficult tasks of life that arise during the critical period of retirement. These include the ability to control your emotions, the emotional flexibility, the ability to subdue your emotions and use them to achieve your goals, the ability to control your behavior by managing your emotions, and the ability to motivate yourself with emotions.
