Abstract

The article contains research on the connection between signs of social failure and features of personality self-identifications. The research is focused on the relationship between the criteria of social success or failure that are transmitted by society and the self-identifying elements of personal identity. Personal identity refers to the set of elements that distinguish an individual from others and ensure their constancy over time and in different spaces. These elements are registered through self-identification parameters. Criteria of social failure were identified and recorded on the basis of the respondents’ mental images during the presentation of various failure scenarios. The research outlines the methods used for data acquisition and processing, including testing, surveying, ranking, frequency and content analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis. The study uncovered the ways in which individuals actualize three groups of personal identity elements: personal self, reflected self, and unique self, in situations of social failure. Content elements of identity, responsible for the flexibility and integrity of identity, ensuring the continuity of self-identifications in time and space (personal self), are more often reflexed. Additionally, the individual focuses on the characteristics that reinforce their perception of being unique (referred to as the ‘unique self’). The parameters of the ‘reflected self’, which are influenced by external social evaluations, are given less consideration.
